Chapter 10

It was nine-forty-five by the time the seven of us loaded into the van. Mo and Robyn had planned to spend the morning by the pool while the rest of us visited the Thornhearts.

“Do you remember where we’re going?” Samantha asked as she climbed into the van and closed the door behind her.

“Hopedale, the fishing community,” I replied and brought up the directions on my phone. “We’re looking for St. Bernard Parish near Bayou La Loutre.”

The first and last time we came here, we had to rely on a taxi driver to take us there, and we had to hope he knew where he was going. At least this time we had a better idea of direction, and I imagined I’d recognize the area once we arrived.

The directions on my phone said it would take forty-seven minutes to get there, and there didn’t appear to be too many holdups along the way. In fact, the hardest part about the drive was getting through New Orleans. It wasn’t festival season, so it wasn’t as busy as it would be between February and May, but it was still a bustling city.

The drive became much easier once we’d left the city and headed south. My coven talked among themselves, and I joined in occasionally, but I mainly focused on the roads. Tasha was my copilot, so she was in charge of the music, and she had a lot of fun searching through the playlist to find the perfect songs.

It was just after ten-thirty by the time we’d reached Hopedale. I pulled the van over at the first available spot, and we all clambered out and took in our surroundings. The humidity was much thicker here than it was in the city, but it wasn’t quite as hot without all the concrete and asphalt.

Winter was creeping up on us, but I was glad I’d decided to wear shorts and a t-shirt. Fiona had Robyn’s rain jacket in case we needed it, and the others were all dressed in appropriate clothing, too. They wore long dresses, rompers, or loose overalls. Willow was the only one who wore an all-black outfit that was cinched around her tiny waist, and it covered her arms and legs.

“If I remember correctly, the dock is down this way.” Fiona pointed ahead of her.

“It is.” Willow nodded.

“Then let’s go,” Samantha decided.

The dusty road we were on was lined with various tents and shacks. There were tables lined with fresh-caught fish, and the salty, low-tide scent seemed to cling inside my nostrils long after we’d passed the tent.

From what I remembered, the community was almost completely wiped out by Hurricane Katrina, but they’d managed to rebuild in the years since. It had made the community stronger, and they now relied heavily on the assistance of each other.

A few people stared at us as we walked past them, even though we weren’t in a closed-off community where only residents were allowed to travel. Maybe we just stuck out like sore thumbs because of our clothes or maybe it was just our unfamiliar faces.
